SUMMARY:Natural back care and spine health
DESCRIPTION:Exploring the body’s capacity for release and realignment through the Buttafly Technique \nWhat if caring for the spine is not simply a matter of stretching\, strengthening\, manipulating or correcting the body? \nIn this talk\, Loulou James will offer a different perspective on back care and spinal health\, drawing on more than 40 years of clinical experience and what she has learned through developing the Buttafly Technique. \nWe’ll explore the body’s own capacity for adaptation\, release and realignment—and consider how we can create the conditions that allow its natural intelligence to respond. \nLoulou will introduce the principles behind the Buttafly Technique and\, where practical\, guide the group through some simple experiential explorations\, bringing the ideas to life within the body. \nThe talk is suitable for anyone interested in understanding their back and spine differently. \nAbout Loulou James MCSP\nLoulou is a Spine Health Specialist and the founder of the Buttafly® and the Buttafly Technique. A retired physiotherapist with more than 40 years’ clinical and teaching experience\, her background also encompasses yoga\, Lifestyle Prescriptions® health coaching and abdominal massage. \nThroughout her career\, Loulou has been interested not only in relieving symptoms\, but in understanding why the body responds as it does—and what becomes possible when we learn to listen to it. Her work brings together clinical understanding\, movement and embodied awareness\, grounded in a deep respect for the body’s intelligence and its capacity to adapt\, release and find its way back towards balance. \nThrough the Buttafly Technique\, her teaching and her individual work\, Loulou invites people to move beyond seeing the body as something that must constantly be corrected\, and towards a more curious\, trusting and collaborative relationship with themselves.

SUMMARY:Transform Your Yoga: Supporting the shoulders and spine
DESCRIPTION:What happens to your spine when you raise your arms? \nYoga frequently asks us to reach our arms overhead\, outwards or behind us. Yet these movements do not happen at the shoulder joints in isolation. The shoulder blades move in relationship to the ribs\, which in turn connect to the thoracic spine. \nWhen movement through the shoulders is limited\, the body intelligently finds another way to complete the action — often through the ribs and spine. What appears to be greater shoulder movement may include the ribs moving forwards or increased extension through the thoracic or lumbar spine. Becoming aware of how the movement is being shared gives us more choice. \nIn this practical workshop\, we’ll use accessible anatomy\, movement and guided awareness to explore the relationship between the shoulders\, rib cage and spine\, and how thoughtful support can reveal new possibilities throughout the upper body. \nSuitable for all levels of yoga practitioners\, from beginners to experienced teachers. \nJoin live or watch the recording\nThe workshop will be held live online via Zoom\, giving you the opportunity to learn\, ask questions and explore the practice together. \nIf you can’t make it live\, or would simply like to revisit what you’ve learned\, everyone who books will receive access to the workshop recording for 7 days. \nThere will be opportunities to ask questions during the live workshop. If you’d like personalised guidance specific to your own body or practice\, one-to-one consultations are also available. \nThis workshop forms part of Transform Your Yoga\, a series exploring the relationship between the spine and the rest of the body — and how support\, awareness and curiosity can change the way we experience yoga. Each session brings together accessible anatomy\, imagery\, movement and guided awareness\, inviting you to notice your own patterns and understand your body more deeply through your own experience. Each workshop can be enjoyed on its own or as part of the complete series. \nAbout Loulou James MCSP\nLoulou is a Spine Health Specialist\, retired physiotherapist\, yoga teacher\, educator and founder of the Buttafly. Drawing on more than 40 years’ experience\, her work explores how the body’s innate intelligence expresses itself through the spine\, and how the right conditions can support greater ease\, adaptability and balance. \nDon’t have a Buttafly yet? You’re still very welcome to join. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of how thoughtful prop use can support your practice and help you decide whether the Buttafly is right for you.

SUMMARY:Harnessing the power of the natural breath
DESCRIPTION:Every breath creates movement through the body\, including the spine. What happens when we bring our awareness to this natural rhythm and begin to work with it? \nBreathing is something the body already knows how to do. Yet we can become so focused on breathing techniques\, controlling the breath or trying to breathe “correctly” that we overlook the extraordinary movement already taking place. \nIn this practical workshop\, we’ll slow down\, tune in and explore the natural breath through our own experience. \nThrough simple\, accessible anatomy and guided awareness\, we’ll look at what happens within the body as we breathe and explore the relationship between the breath\, ribs\, spine and pelvis. \nRather than imposing a particular breathing pattern\, we’ll become curious about the movement that’s already there. We’ll explore how posture and support can influence the freedom of the breath\, and how awareness of this natural rhythm can begin to influence movement\, alignment and our experience of being present in the body. \nThis isn’t about mastering a breathing technique. It’s an opportunity to understand something we do thousands of times every day and experience its relationship with the body in a new way. \nSlow down\, tune in and explore your natural breath — discovering the power within this simple relationship\, and the ease and presence that can emerge. \nSuitable for all levels of yoga practitioners\, from complete beginners to experienced teachers. No previous knowledge of anatomy is needed. \nAbout Loulou James MCSP\nLoulou is a Spine Health Specialist\, retired physiotherapist\, yoga teacher\, educator and founder of the Buttafly. Drawing on more than 40 years’ experience\, her workshops bring together practical anatomy\, movement and embodied exploration\, inviting people to understand their bodies more deeply through their own experience.

SUMMARY:Transform Your Yoga: Connecting with the heart space
DESCRIPTION:What changes when heart opening begins with support rather than effort? \nHeart opening begins long before we move into a backbend. It begins by meeting the body where it is and becoming aware of the relationship between the pelvis\, spine\, rib cage\, shoulders and breath. When the body is appropriately supported\, space can begin to emerge without lifting\, pushing or holding the chest in a particular shape. \nIn this practical workshop\, we’ll explore how the Buttafly can support a range of gentle and more active practices around the heart space. Through thoughtful positioning and guided awareness\, you’ll be invited to notice how the support beneath one part of the body influences the response elsewhere — how the ribs move with the breath\, how the shoulders relate to the upper spine and how the pelvis provides a foundation for movement. \nRather than asking the body to reproduce an external idea of a heart-opening pose\, we’ll explore how comfort\, breath and appropriate support can create the conditions for expansion to emerge from within. SUMMARY:Transform Your Yoga: Finding ease through the hips
DESCRIPTION:What happens through your spine when your hips cannot move freely? \nThe hips are remarkable joints — designed to provide both stability and freedom of movement. They influence how we sit\, stand and move\, and how movement and load are transferred between the legs\, pelvis and spine. \nMany people experience restriction around the hips\, often described as “tight hips” or “tight hamstrings.” Yet what we feel in one area does not always tell the whole story. When movement through the hips is limited\, the body intelligently finds another way to complete the action\, often with the pelvis and spine adapting in response. \nIn this practical workshop\, we’ll explore how the hips\, pelvis and spine share movement within familiar yoga poses. Through accessible anatomy\, movement and guided awareness\, you’ll be invited to notice where movement is taking place\, where effort arises and how thoughtful positioning and support from the Buttafly can create new possibilities for comfort\, movement and natural alignment. \nRather than forcing a greater range of movement or treating tightness as something to overcome\, we’ll explore how the right conditions can reduce unnecessary effort and allow greater comfort\, freedom and ease to emerge. SUMMARY:Transform Your Yoga: Experiencing the pelvis from within
DESCRIPTION:What does a “neutral pelvis” actually mean in a living\, moving body? \nFor many people\, their first introduction to the pelvis is being asked to find a “neutral” position. This can make the pelvis seem like something we need to place correctly and hold\, rather than a responsive part of the body that continually adapts to gravity\, support and movement. \nThe pelvis is central to how we sit\, stand and move\, transferring weight and movement between the legs and spine. In this practical workshop\, we’ll explore its relationship with the hips\, spine\, ground and the rest of the body through accessible anatomy\, imagery\, movement and guided awareness. \nWith thoughtful positioning and support from the Buttafly\, you’ll be invited to notice how your experience changes as the conditions change. Rather than trying to place the pelvis in a prescribed position\, we’ll explore how the body can sense\, respond and organise itself with greater comfort and ease. SUMMARY:Transform Your Yoga: Grounding through the feet
DESCRIPTION:How does the way your feet meet the ground influence your spine? \nOur feet and ankles form the foundation of every standing pose\, providing stability\, adaptability and balance with every step we take. More than a base\, they continually sense and respond to the ground\, helping the rest of the body organise itself for posture and movement. \nBut what happens when we leave our yoga class? We slip our feet into shoes\, often giving little thought to these remarkable structures until something begins to hurt or feel stiff. \nDo you grip your toes when you stand — perhaps only on one foot? Do your feet feel grounded and responsive\, or are they simply carrying you from one place to another? As the feet respond to the ground\, the knees\, hips\, pelvis and spine adapt above them to help us remain balanced. \nIn this practical workshop\, we’ll give the feet our full attention\, exploring their relationship with balance\, proprioception and the spine. Through accessible anatomy\, movement\, guided awareness and thoughtful use of the Buttafly\, you’ll be invited to notice how you distribute your weight\, how each foot responds and how small changes beneath you can influence the organisation of the whole body. \nRather than trying to place the feet in a prescribed “correct” position\, we’ll explore how a more responsive relationship with the ground can support greater comfort\, stability and freedom in both yoga and everyday movement.
