This copy was bought for me by my Grandma Joan as a birthday present, and in recognition of how proud she was of me as I began my training. This tome of a book sat on my desk throughout my years of study—sometimes a little weighty in its intimidation as well as its physical form. I’ve never been one for rote learning, and how I was going to be familiar with even 5% of its contents felt like a mystery at the time. Still, I passed my exams the first time around, so the book clearly did its job!

I bought this book years ago while living in Hong Kong, when I was working for the military as a locally employed civilian. I was based in Sek Kong Village near the border with China, supporting personnel on the base—expats, Chinese locals, and Gurkhas. Precious perks of the job included access to an outdoor swimming pool and authentically-cooked Nepalese food in chez Gurung's!
Back then, I hadn’t heard of Leon Chaitow. Years later, I found myself sitting in his classroom in London. Watching him assess a live model, I remember thinking: he has magic coming out of his hands. Pure magic. This book has stayed with me through that arc—early curiosity, clinical practice, and the privilege of learning from the source.
