Exploring the connection between symptoms, emotions, beliefs and the body
Lifestyle Prescriptions® offers a unique framework for understanding the possible emotional, mental and lifestyle influences behind physical symptoms.
At the heart of this work is the Organ-Mind-Brain Anatomy — a model that explores the relationship between specific areas of the body, emotional experiences, and the body's adaptive responses.
Many people are familiar with the idea that stress can affect health. Lifestyle Prescriptions® takes this exploration further by helping individuals investigate whether recurring symptoms may be connected to unresolved emotional experiences, unconscious beliefs, ongoing life conflicts or patterns of thought that have become embodied over time.
Rather than asking only, "What is wrong with this body part?", we also ask: "What might this symptom be communicating?"
A biopsychosocial approach to understanding symptoms
Physical symptoms do not arise in isolation.
Our experiences, relationships, beliefs, emotions, environment and physical habits all influence how we function and respond to life's challenges.
Using the Lifestyle Prescriptions® framework, we explore symptoms through a biopsychosocial lens, considering the interaction between:
- the physical body
- emotional experiences
- Mental and behavioural patterns
- lifestyle factors
- environmental influences
This process often reveals connections that may not previously have been recognised.
Unravelling the mystery of symptoms
My particular interest lies in supporting people with low back pain and other musculoskeletal symptoms.
Many people notice that their symptoms seem to come and go without any obvious explanation. Pain may appear unexpectedly, disappear just as mysteriously, or flare up at times that make little sense.
One of the most valuable aspects of the Lifestyle Prescriptions® approach is learning to recognise that symptoms often follow patterns, even when those patterns are not immediately apparent.Sometimes symptoms arise during periods of stress, uncertainty or emotional challenge.
Equally, they may emerge when life becomes calmer, a conflict is resolved, an important decision has been made, or a long period of pressure comes to an end. This can feel confusing when we have been taught to think of symptoms purely in terms of injury, wear and tear, or stress-related.
Many of us have come to accept that stress can influence our health, yet we still often expect a simple relationship: more stress equals more symptoms; less stress equals fewer symptoms. In practice, the picture is often far more nuanced than this.
Identifying unconscious patterns
Through the lens of Organ-Mind-Brain Anatomy, we begin to explore whether symptoms may reflect deeper adaptive processes taking place within the body. Rather than asking, "Why is this happening to me?", we begin asking, "What was happening in my life before this symptom appeared?"
This requires awareness, curiosity and often a degree of honesty with ourselves. The answers are not always immediately obvious, nor are they always comfortable. As we begin to explore the connections between our symptoms and our lives, we may recognise pressures we have been carrying, responsibilities we have taken on, conflicts we have been navigating, losses we have not fully processed, or expectations we have placed upon ourselves without realising their impact.
This is why compassion is such an important part of the process. Not because we are broken, but because understanding often reveals just how much we have been carrying, adapting to, or managing beneath the surface.
As patterns become visible, many people discover that their symptoms make more sense than they first imagined. What once felt random, frustrating or unfair can begin to feel understandable.
Creating Your Lifestyle Prescription®
As awareness develops, personalised Lifestyle Prescriptions® can be created to support meaningful change
These may include practical recommendations relating to lifestyle, movement, stress regulation, self-awareness practices or emotional wellbeing.
The intention is not to mask or fight symptoms, but to support the conditions in which the body can do what it is naturally designed to do: adapt, recover and heal.
Working with me
My approach combines Lifestyle Prescriptions® with my wider experience in musculoskeletal health, embodied awareness, and hands-on therapeutic work.
Together, we explore not only where symptoms are showing up in the body, but also the story that may be sitting beneath them.
Because often the greatest shift begins not with treatment, but with understanding.
When we begin to understand the body from a functional perspective — not simply what hurts, but what that part of the body is designed to do and may be communicating through symptoms — something often shifts. Fear and frustration give way to curiosity, awareness and understanding, creating space for a more compassionate relationship with ourselves.
