Using the Buttafly for Therapeutic Support in Yoga

The Standard Buttafly supports the leg in modified Corpse Pose (Savasana) to provide comfort and ease.

When it comes to yoga props, while most teachers and students are familiar with the usual items – blocks, bolsters, and straps – many have yet to discover that the Buttafly’s unique wedge shape goes beyond comfort and support to offer therapeutic value.

In many lying yoga poses, when there is an inability to fully extend an arm or leg due to restricted movement at the elbow, shoulder, hip or knee, it’s always a diagonal or triangular gap that forms between the floor and the limb.

A lack of suitable support often means that an individual voluntarily restricts joint range further to promote comfort or suffers discomfort. Both situations result in physical contraction, which is counterproductive to restful relaxation.

This is where the Buttafly truly shines. Its ergonomic wedge design slides seamlessly into these diagonal spaces, offering stable, comfortable support right where it’s needed. Instead of forcing the body to adapt to a flat block or stack of blankets, the Buttafly meets the body at its natural angle, encouraging better alignment and ease.

Practical ways to use the wedge shape of the Buttafly

  • For limited joint range of elbows and wrists: Use a Buttafly crossways under the forearm or hand to promote comfort and ease.
  • For limited leg extension due to stiff hips or knees: For restorative and Yin yoga, use a Buttafly crossways under the calf or thigh to provide support.
  • For painful or stiff hips and shoulders: When joints are sensitive, placing the Buttafly lengthwise under an arm or leg can gently support internal rotation (for comfort and pain relief) or external rotation (to encourage gentle mobility and flexibility).

The Standard Buttafly can be used to ease hip pain and stiffness in supine lying.

Therapeutic benefits for all restorative practices

The Buttafly’s wedge isn’t just about accessibility, it’s about comfort and therapeutic care. For students with limited mobility, recovering from injury, or simply looking for a more mindful, supported practice, this prop offers a gentle invitation to explore poses that might otherwise feel out of reach.

By adapting to the body’s needs, rather than demanding the body conform to the prop, the Buttafly helps create a safer, kinder, and more inclusive yoga environment.

If you’re a yoga teacher or practitioner looking to bring more therapeutic support and creativity to your classes, the Buttafly’s wedged shape is a game changer. It’s a simple innovation with a big impact, helping everyone in the room feel more comfortable, confident, and cared for.
