Reflections on the Subtlety of Pain Relief
“Although I initially felt no significant effect after a 20-minute session, that night I experienced my most comfortable night and slept 8 hours through for the first time in years.”
This honest client reflection is a powerful reminder: pain relief is often subtle, and the absence of discomfort can be almost silent compared to its presence. Let’s explore why this happens, what science says, and how you can recognise and trust these gentle shifts.
The science behind subtle relief
Gentle, supportive techniques like the Buttafly encourage the parasympathetic (“rest and digest”) system, helping the body shift out of high-alert, protective states. This transition is often quiet—felt as relaxation, ease, or, as above, a restorative night’s sleep rather than a dramatic “aha” moment.
What does “rest and digest” really look like in everyday life? Just the other day, I visited a client who asked, “Why do I feel so tired? What’s wrong with me? I’ve got no energy—all I want to do is eat and sleep.” These are common questions when the body finally gets a chance to shift gears into healing mode. I reflected back to her that these very symptoms—tiredness, hunger, a desire to rest—are exactly what can be expected and welcomed in the healing process.
Instead of wondering, “What’s wrong with me?” I invited her to try, “Oh, my body’s healing. Thank you, body. Now I know what to do: listen to you, and let my mind be quiet instead of filling me with angst about my shopping list of chores.”
This gentle reframing can be incredibly powerful. When we recognise these signs as evidence of healing, not failure, we can respond with kindness, patience, and trust in our body’s wisdom.
Practical Tip: Spotting “Rest and Digest” in Your Life
- Am I feeling more relaxed or sleepy than usual?
- Do I notice my breathing is slower, or my heart rate is calmer?
- Am I drawn to nourishing foods, or do I want to curl up and rest?
Pain is louder than relief
Small wins and cumulative progress
Healing is often a process of small, cumulative gains. Subtle shifts—like being able to sleep through the night—are real signs of change, even if they don’t match our expectations of what “healing” should feel like
Emotional and physical healing are linked
Our emotional state, expectations, and where we place our attention all shape our experience of pain and relief. The Buttafly approach recognises that gentle, consistent self-care and awareness of these links support lasting change.
Bringing science into your daily life
Awareness is key. If you’re living with pain, try bringing your full attention to how you move through your day. Notice the things you can do with ease that might have been a struggle before. Pay attention to moments when you’re able to do something you wouldn’t normally manage—these small wins are often the first hints that change is happening.
Relief may be quieter than pain, but it is every bit as real—and often the first sign that your body is moving in the right direction. If you don’t feel a dramatic difference straight away, trust that your body may be working in the background, and celebrate even the subtlest improvements.
