A Healthy Spine for LIFE: why this is not a typical course

One of the challenges in writing about A Healthy Spine for LIFE has been finding the right words to describe it.

From the beginning, I knew it wasn’t a typical course. The difficulty was not knowing what I would teach, it was finding language that truly reflects the experience I hope people will have.

Most courses are built around learning more, doing more or acquiring new skills, techniques or information.

While there will certainly be practical learning, that isn’t the heart of this course.

The heart of this course is learning to listen.

Over the years, both through my work as a physiotherapist and through developing the Buttafly Technique, I have become increasingly convinced that self-awareness is one of the most important foundations of health.

Many of us spend our lives being pulled outward. We are busy, distracted and constantly responding to the demands of work, family and technology. We become skilled at pushing through discomfort, overriding fatigue and ignoring the quieter signals from our body.

Yet the body is communicating with us all the time: through posture, breathing, tension, comfort and discomfort.

The question is not whether the body is speaking so much as, “Are we listening?”

A different relationship with the body

When people come to me with back pain, neck pain or postural concerns, they are often looking for a solution.

An exercise, a stretch or hands-on correction.

Sometimes those approaches have their place, but what interests me most is helping people develop a different relationship with their body.

A relationship built on awareness rather than force, curiosity rather than correction.

Over time, I have observed that when people begin to listen to their bodies differently, they often develop a greater understanding of what they need. They become more aware of their posture, their breathing, their habits and the factors that influence how they feel.

From back care to spine health

This is one of the reasons I make a distinction between back care and spine health.

Back care is often focused on managing symptoms. This is important, particularly when someone is experiencing pain or limitation.

Spine health invites a broader conversation about how we sit, move, breathe and live in our bodies.

It asks not only, “How can I feel better?” but also, “What is my body trying to tell me?”

For me, this shift in perspective is fundamental. It moves us away from seeing the body as something that occasionally goes wrong, and towards recognising it as an intelligent system that is constantly adapting and communicating.

Learning to listen

During A Healthy Spine for LIFE, we explore posture, breathing, movement, balance, relaxation and spine health.

But perhaps the most important practice we explore is simply paying attention. Taking time to pause, and become as fully aware of yourself as you can in any given moment.

This becomes an invitation to notice the subtle signals that are often overlooked in the busyness of everyday life.

Perhaps, in doing so, you will discover that your body knows far more than you think.
