Seated Meditation: Find Comfort & Ease Using the Buttafly

Woman demonstrates effortless good posture with the Standard size Buttafly, ergonomically designed by a physiotherapist for comfort and ease.

Why alignment matters

If you practise seated meditation and other yoga practices like pranayama, you’ve probably been told to sit up straight.

It’s well-intentioned advice. Yet for many people, the real issue isn’t effort or discipline – it’s the set-up.

When your pelvis isn’t supported well, your body has to work hard just to stay upright. That effort quietly steals from the very things you’re practising for: steadiness, breath, focus, and ease.

The common pattern: sitting cross-legged and rolling back

When we sit cross-legged directly on the floor (or on a standard yoga block), many of us roll onto the back of the sitting bones. This takes the pelvis into a posterior pelvic tilt.

From there, a predictable chain reaction often follows:

  1. The natural curve in the lumbar spine flattens.
  2. Your alignment and centre of gravity shift.
  3. To avoid falling backwards, the body compensates.

One of the most common compensations is that the shoulder girdle comes forward of the pelvic girdle.

Then, if you want to look up at the horizon, you may end up over-extending further up the spine – often in the mid-back (around the shoulder blades), the neck, or both.

Over time, this can mean overuse of the back muscles, leading to fatigue and eventually pain.

Support the pelvis well for effortless good posture

This is where ergonomic pelvic support changes everything.

When the pelvis is supported in a way that allows it to sit more neutrally, the spine doesn’t have to work hard to stay upright. Breathing tends to feel easier. The head can balance more naturally. The shoulders can soften.

Comfort and ease become the foundation of your seated practices.

A quick note if you’re new to the Buttafly

When people sit on the Buttafly for the first time, some continue to use these compensatory strategies out of habit – even though they are no longer necessary.

That’s completely normal. The body learns patterns through repetition, and it can take a moment to trust a new set-up.

In this short video, I share a simple tip to help you let go of those habitual patterns, so you can sit with more comfort and ease and get more from your yoga and meditation practice. https://youtu.be/nHhw2_xSiiU
