Transform Your Yoga: Grounding through the feet

How does the way your feet meet the ground influence your spine?

Our feet and ankles form the foundation of every standing pose, providing stability, adaptability and balance with every step we take. More than a base, they continually sense and respond to the ground, helping the rest of the body organise itself for posture and movement.

But what happens when we leave our yoga class? We slip our feet into shoes, often giving little thought to these remarkable structures until something begins to hurt or feel stiff.

Do you grip your toes when you stand — perhaps only on one foot? Do your feet feel grounded and responsive, or are they simply carrying you from one place to another? As the feet respond to the ground, the knees, hips, pelvis and spine adapt above them to help us remain balanced.

In this practical workshop, we’ll give the feet our full attention, exploring their relationship with balance, proprioception and the spine. Through accessible anatomy, movement, guided awareness and thoughtful use of the Buttafly, you’ll be invited to notice how you distribute your weight, how each foot responds and how small changes beneath you can influence the organisation of the whole body.

Rather than trying to place the feet in a prescribed “correct” position, we’ll explore how a more responsive relationship with the ground can support greater comfort, stability and freedom in both yoga and everyday movement.

Suitable for all levels of yoga practitioners, from beginners to experienced teachers.

Join live or watch the recording

The workshop will be held live online via Zoom, giving you the opportunity to learn, ask questions and explore the practice together.

If you can’t make it live, or would simply like to revisit what you’ve learned, everyone who books will receive access to the workshop recording for 7 days.

There will be opportunities to ask questions during the live workshop. If you’d like personalised guidance specific to your own body or practice, one-to-one consultations are also available.

This workshop forms part of Transform Your Yoga, a series exploring the relationship between the spine and the rest of the body — and how support, awareness and curiosity can change the way we experience yoga. Each session brings together accessible anatomy, imagery, movement and guided awareness, inviting you to notice your own patterns and understand your body more deeply through your own experience. Each workshop can be enjoyed on its own or as part of the complete series.
